What is Zaghloul Dates?
The Zaghloul date is a uniquely Egyptian treasure, famous for being one of the few date varieties that is deliciously consumed at the crunchy Khalal stage, rather than as a soft, dried Tamr.
Appearance & Taste
Large, elongated date with a distinctive dark red skin. It is long, crunchy, and extremely sweet. The texture is crispy and refreshing rather than soft and chewy. It has a high moisture content of 30–35% and an average weight of 18 to 25 grams per date. Its flavor is sweet, honeyed, and caramelly.
Origin & Harvest
Native to Egypt and exclusively grown there. It is one of the most popular fresh date varieties in the country. Harvest season runs from July to October. It is consumed at the Khalal (crunchy) stage, making it a fresh fruit rather than a dried one. The ripening process is classified into four stages: green, turning, fully coloured, and discoloured.
Nutrition
Zaghloul dates have high values of total soluble solids, protein, total and reducing sugars, and total phenols. They are rich in antioxidants and nutrients, making them a healthy fresh snack.
Health & Tradition
The high phenolic content contributes to antioxidant properties. In Egypt, Zaghloul dates are a beloved seasonal treat, eagerly awaited each year. They are often eaten fresh as a snack and are a popular street food during their short season. Their crunchy texture and refreshing sweetness make them a favourite among all ages.
Culinary Use
Best enjoyed fresh, out of hand, as a crunchy snack. Its unique texture makes it perfect for eating raw rather than cooking or baking. It can be used in fruit salads or as a refreshing addition to cheese platters. Due to its high moisture content, it does not keep well and should be consumed fresh.
