This cultivar was introduced in the early 18th century from Al-Hijaz (in present-day Saudi Arabia) by Mohamed Laggai and first planted in the Abu Hamed area. It is also known as "Bint Atmur" (بنت عتمور) after its original homeland, the village of Atmur in Dar Al-Rabatab, Sudan.
