What is Thoory Dates?
The Thoory date is unique for being one of the driest and firmest varieties, earning it the nickname "Bread Date." It has a distinctively nutty flavor and an exceptionally long shelf life.
Appearance & Taste
Medium-sized, oval to elongated, with a characteristic wrinkled and dry appearance. The color ranges from brownish-yellow to golden-amber. Texture is firm, dry, hard, and very chewy. The defining feature is its flavor: sweet but not overly sugary, with distinct nutty and almost earthy notes. Often called the "Bread Date" because its dry, pasty texture resembles bread. Also known as the "Bull's Date" (تمر الثور).
Origin & Harvest
Originates from Algeria, specifically the Maghreb region of North Africa. It was introduced to the United States around 1900. Thoory palms are known for their hardiness and ability to thrive in arid conditions. Harvested when fully dry on the tree, which concentrates their sugars and gives them their characteristic hardness. Excellent storage capability allows them to be kept for very long periods without refrigeration due to their low moisture content.
Nutrition
Approximately 280 calories per 100g. Rich in dietary fiber (very high), potassium, magnesium, iron, and B-vitamins. Contains natural sugars but with a lower glycemic index compared to softer, moister dates due to its higher fiber-to-sugar ratio. Almost zero fat and no cholesterol.
Health & Tradition
The very high fiber content is excellent for digestive health and promotes a feeling of fullness, which can aid in weight management. The firm, dry texture requires more chewing, which can help with oral health by stimulating saliva production. Once a favorite of desert travelers because it keeps well without spoiling. Now a popular snack with hikers, campers, and golfers for the same reason.
