What is Siwi Dates?
The Siwi date (also known as Saidi) is a variety of ancient Egyptian origin, deeply tied to the heritage of the Siwa Oasis and Upper Egypt. It is prized for its unique chewy texture and delicate, less intense sweetness.
Appearance & Taste
A small date of excellent quality with a light brown to golden-brown color. The texture is semi-dry and chewy. A distinctive feature is that the tip is naturally softer than the base. The flavor is sweet, honeyed, and caramelly with a less intense sweetness compared to other varieties, making it ideal for those who prefer a more delicate taste. Its 48 flavour compounds give it the most complex aroma profile among Egyptian dates.
Origin & Harvest
Native to Upper Egypt, specifically the Siwa Oasis. Named after "Sa'id," the Arabic word for Upper Egypt. It is one of the three most important varieties in Siwa, alongside Frehi and Azzawi. The date palms start producing fruit after around 10 years and reach maximum production between 10 and 25 years of age. Harvest begins at the start of October. It is a semi-dry variety with lower moisture content, making it more shelf-stable.
Nutrition
A good source of fiber, potassium, and other nutrients. Exhibits good antibacterial and antifungal activities. Contains important elements such as nickel and silicon not reported in other Egyptian date varieties.
Health & Tradition
The high fiber content aids digestion. It is a general tonic for the body, helps treat anemia, and prevents nervous disorders due to its high sugar and potassium content. In Siwa, dates are used in many local dishes such as Elhuji (egg, olive oil, and dates), Tarfant (bread, olive oil, and dates), and Tagilla (flour, olive oil, water, and dates). During Ramadan, they are eaten in the evening to break the fast.
