What is Medjool Dates?
The 'King of Dates' for its regal size and buttery, caramel-like richness. Unlike most dates which are dried on the tree, Medjool dates are harvested fresh, giving them a uniquely plump and moist texture. While often consumed at the soft, ripe stage (Rutab), they are one of the most versatile dates in the world.
Appearance & Taste
Very large, oval to oblong shape. Color ranges from golden amber to rich, dark brown. Skin is thick, wrinkled, and glossy. Texture is soft, moist, and meaty, sometimes described as melting. Flavor is intensely sweet with distinct notes of caramel, butterscotch, and honey. The large pit is easily removable.

Originates from the Tafilalet Valley in southeastern Morocco, with historical mentions dating back to the 17th century. The name "Mejhoul" (meaning "unknown" in Arabic) suggests they were once a rare, unknown variety to outsiders. It was brought to the United States in 1927 and is now also commercially grown in California, Israel, and Jordan. Primarily harvested in the Rutab (soft ripe) stage from September to October, though it can be sun-dried into a chewier "Tamr".
