What is Khadrawy Dates?
Originating from Iraq, the Khadrawy date has a distinctively mild, caramel-like flavor and an extremely silky, almost melt-in-the-mouth consistency.
Appearance & Taste
Small to medium-sized, with a stout oval shape and a distinctive reddish-brown to dark mahogany color. The skin is thin, papery, and slightly wrinkled. Texture is extremely soft, gooey, and silky, with an almost fiber-less interior. The flavor is a mild, buttery caramel, with notes of fig and coconut. It is notably less sweet than Medjool and not cloying, which makes it great for snacking.
Origin & Harvest
Native to present-day Iraq, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The name "Khadrawy" comes from the Arabic word for "greenish" (الأخضر), possibly referring to the color of the fruit in its early stages. It was introduced to California in the early 1900s. Trees are known for their upright, slow growth with a slender trunk. Harvested in the fall and early winter. Due to its high moisture content (higher than average), it spoils quickly and should be kept cool or frozen.
Nutrition
An excellent source of dietary fiber, folic acid, iron, potassium, protein, and B-vitamins. Per 100g: approximately 280 calories, 0g fat, 75g carbohydrates, 6g fiber, 2g protein. Its high moisture content contributes to a slightly lower calorie density compared to drier dates.
Health & Tradition
The high fiber content aids digestion. The iron content is beneficial for preventing and managing anemia. The soft, almost fiber-less flesh makes it easy to digest. In Iraqi tradition, it is a favored date for daily consumption and for breaking the fast during Ramadan. In California, it is a sought-after specialty item for date connoisseurs.
