This soft date is one of the most famous varieties from Iran, prized for its high moisture content, deep dark color, and rich, caramel-like sweetness.
Appearance & Taste
Medium-sized, about 2.5–4.5 cm (1–2 in), with an oval to oblong shape. The skin is glossy, thin, and dark brown to black. The texture is very soft, moist, fleshy, and tender, almost melting in the mouth. The flavor is intensely sweet with a rich, caramel-like sweetness.
Origin & Harvest
Originates from the Bam region in Kerman province, southeastern Iran. Cultivation in the Bam region dates back hundreds of years, favored by the area's hot, dry climate and abundant underground water sources. Harvest begins in August and lasts until October. Unlike many other varieties that are fully dried, Mazafati dates are picked when fully ripe and retain a high moisture content of between 32 and 35%.
